   Happy New Year! Here's another update. I found more UNIX bins on
   another tape ('ken-sky'). They appear to be between V3 and V4. I have
   attached them as "ken_sky_bins.tar". I have also attached an updated
   tarball of the V2/V3 bins recovered from the 'e-pi' tape (with a few
   names corrected), see "identified_v2v3_bins_r2.tar".

   So far, the rough timeline of UNIX binaries (RTM hereinafter refers to
   the exact version of the OS described by the preserved manuals) is as
   follows:

   Sys: V1 RTM <= unix-study-src < s1/s2 < V2 RTM < V3 RTM < nsys < V4 RTM

   Bin: V1 RTM < s1/s2 < epi-V2 < epi-V3 < ken-sky-bins < V4 RTM

   There is a possibility that the V2 bins from the 'e-pi' tape belong to
   V2 RTM, as they're all PDP-11/20 bins with V2 headers. In contrast,
   most of the bins from the s1/s2 tapes are V1 bins. Some of them are
   identical to those from the 's2' tape, and if the timestamps from the
   's2' tape can be trusted, they're from May/June 1972.

   The V3 bins from the 'e-pi' tape are most likely from late 1972 or
   early 1973, but no later than Feb 1973, as they've been overwritten by
   files from Feb 1973. This suggests they're from a V3 beta, supported by
   the fact that some features described in the V3 manual are missing. The
   files were laid out in perfect alphabetical order on the tape.

   The bins from the 'ken-sky' tape fall somewhere between V3 RTM and V4
   RTM. The directory structure and other elements match the V3 manual, as
   do the syscalls (e.g., the arguments for kill(2) differ between V3 and
   V4, and these bins use the V3 arguments). The features, however, are
   closer to V4. For example, nm(1) had already been rewritten in C and
   matches the V4 manual's description. The assembler also matches the V4
   manual in terms of the number of temp files, and the C compiler refers
   to the assembler as 'nas.' The assembler is located physically between
   files starting with "n" and "o," and the files around it follow a weak
   alphabetical order, so it is logical to assume that it was named "nas".

   It is a bit difficult to version these binaries, especially without any
   timestamps. The lines between versions for early UNIX are blurry, and
   modern software versioning terms like "beta" and "RTM" don't really
   apply well. If these binaries are to be preserved (which I hope they
   will be, even though the kernels are long gone), I'd put the V2 bins
   from 'e-pi' under V2, the V3 bins from 'e-pi' under V3, and the bins
   from 'ken-sky' under V4 (I'd argue that nsys also falls under V4, as
   the biggest change between V3 and V4 was the kernel being rewritten in C).

   There are other overwritten files on the tapes, and I will address them
   later. There are quite a few patents, papers, and memos in *roff
   format, but I'm not entirely sure what to do with them. Among those, I
   have picked out some V4 distribution documents and attached them as a
   ZIP folder :-). If you know of ways to generate PDFs from these ancient
   *roff files accurately, please lend a hand - I'm struggling to get
   accurate results from groff.

I maintain groff.  How can I be of assistance?

Is there an exhibit of a troublesome document you'd like me to inspect?
(It's possible given the era that you have some roff(1) documents rather
than nroff(1) or troff(1) ones.)

I wonder what Reeds meant. I know there are issues. For example, the 3B2 I
administered for a while in the late 80s had multiple accounts with rsh,
the restricted shell, as the login shell. That was okay, unless you used su
and then had access to a root shell.

HP/UX was way worse, with over 120 SUID shell scripts in the 90s. A much
more interesting example of insecurity. But somehow, I'm guessing that's
not what Reeds wrote about.

I think $IFS ranks at the top of Jim's cabinet of horrors. For our
multilevel-secure Unix (https://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/~doug/IX), he
took almost everything out of the administrative shell, nosh (the
no-shell shell), The classic /bin/sh was not endowed with any of the
capabilities necessary to override Bell-LaPadula-Biba secrecy or
integrity constraints.

Hi.

The paper on compressing the dictionary was interesting. In the day
of 20 meg disks, compressing a ~ 2.5 meg file down to ~ .5 meg is
a big savings.

Was the compressed dictionary put into use? I could imaging that
spell(1) at least would have needed some library routines to return
a stream of words from it.

I've wondered myself. I am curious how many of these issues POSIX
addresses (and bash, too, of course).

That's an administrator problem. Part of setting up a restricted shell
environment is creating a directory of necessary binaries and setting
PATH appropriately.

Well, the Bourne shell's combination of importing IFS from the environment

I am not aware that the compressed dictionary was used for anything.
Steve Johnson's first shell-script spelling-checker did make a pass
over a dictionary, but not Webster's second, which would have caused
lots of false negatives because it contains so many exotic small words
that could result from typos. My production spell aggresively stripped
affixes and used hashing and other coding tricks to keep its
"dictionary" in the limited memory of a PDP-11. (The whole story is
told in https://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/~doug/spell.pdf and insightfully
described by Jon Bentley in
https://dl.acm.org/doi/pdf/10.1145/3532.315102.) When larger memory
became available, these heroics were replaced by basic common-prefix
coding patterned after Morris and Thompson, just as Arnold surmised.

Where did the Websters Second file come from? Did the labs give the public
domain paper dictionary to the equivalent of a typing pool and had them
enter it? It did it come from elsewhere? Or something else? How was it
checked for accuracy?

I couldn't help but think about the DNS on wire compression format which 
will re-use part of the existing query name to de-duplicate later parts 
of the same query name.

I know it's not the same, but it felt un-ignorably close in both purpose 
and method.

But all this would have been in the C code for spell, and not in
the dictionary used, right?

The word list of Webster's 2nd came from an Air Force project along
with several other files, including a medical dictionary and an
alphabetical list of tetragrams found in Web2--something one would
expect to create for oneself nowadays. The files were freely
distributed with no strings attached. We have not noticed any
mistakes. The list includes 76205 entries that contain blanks or
hyphens; these were omitted from the pinhead exercise.

The BSDs since 4.4lite have added a lot of missing words, but few
corrections. From FreeBSD:

Capitalized Transvaal, fixed 'stock certificate' to have a 't' and
preconsoidate -> preconsolidate

Ahtena, freen, unknowen and structurelessness were removed

corelate (etc)  and freend were removed as typos and only thinly supported
variants.

Not bad for 50 years of nit-pickers pouring over the file.

Lempel and Ziv published the LZ77 paper in 1977 (hence the name) which uses
back pointers into a sliding window of text.  Later tweaks brought us LZ78
and compress and gzip.

There's really only two ways to compress data: use a variable length coding scheme with
the shortest codes for the most common tokens, or a dictionary that uses pointers to
repeated strings.  Huffman invented the former in 1951, Lempel and Ziv the latter in
1977, although as we've seen people did special purpose versions of the dictionary
approach like this one.  Modern schemes use combinarions of both.

The DNS data formats were invented in about 1982 but I have no idea whether
Mockapetris was familar with LZ.  I suppose I could ask him.

The sound situation in the UNIX world to me has always felt particularly
fragmentary, with OSS offering some glimmer of hope but faltering under the long
shadow of ALSA, with a hodge podge of PCM and other low level interfaces
littered about other offerings.

Given AT&T's involvement with the development of just about everything
"sound over wires" for decades by the time UNIX comes along, one would suspect
AT&T would be quite invested in standardizing interfaces for computers
interacting with audio signals on copper wire.  Indeed much of the ESS R&D was
taking in analog telephone signals, digitizing them, and then acting on those
digitized results before converting back to analog to send to the other end.

Where this has me curious is if there were any efforts in Bell Labs, prior to
other industry players having their hands on the steering wheel, to establish an
abstract UNIX interface pattern for interacting with streams of converted audio
signal.  Of course modern formats didn't exist, but the general idea of PCM was
well established, concepts like sampling rates, bit depths, etc. could be used
in calculations to interpret and manipulate digitized audio streams.

Any recollections?  Was the landscape of signal processing solutions just so
particular that trying to create a centralized interface didn't make sense at
the time?  Or was it a simple matter of priorities, with things like language
development and system design taking center stage, leaving a dearth of resources
to direct towards these sorts of matters?  Was there ever a chance of seeing,
say, the 5ESS handling of PCM, extended out to non-switching applications, or
was that stuff firmly siloed over in the switching groups, having no influence
on signal processing outside?

Oh, but *how* great it was when FreeBSD came on over with those
"virtual sound devices", in 4.7 or 4.9 i think it was.  Ie instead
of one blocking device, one could open dev.1 and dev.2 and it was
multiplexed in the kernel.  It did some format conversion in the
kernel alongside this.

It was *fantastic*!, and i had a recording program sitting on
a Cyrix 166+ and it took me ~1.5 percent of (single) CPU to record
our then still great Hessenradio HR3 for long hours (Clubnight
with worldwide known DJs, Chill with great sets in the Sunday
mornings), and oh yes HR2 with the wonderful Mr. Paul Bartholomäi
in "Notenschlüssel" (classical music), and the fantastic "Voyager"
hour with Robert Lug on Sunday evening.  It cannot be any better.
I could code and compile and there was no stuttering alongside.
1.5 percent of CPU, honestly!

I say this because FreeBSD has replaced that very code last year,
if i recall correctly.  It now all scales dynmically, if i read
the patches that flew by right.  (So it may be even better as of
now, but by then, over twenty years ago, it blew my mind.  And the
solution was so simple, you know.  The number of concurrent
devices was a compile time constant if i recall correctly, four by
default.)

I also say this because today i am lucky i can use ALSA on Linux,
and apulse for the firefox i have to use (and do use, too
.. i also browse the internet in such a monster, and at least in
parts still like that).  I always hated those server solutions,
where those masses of audio data flow through several context
switches.  What for?  I never understood.  Someone convinced me to
try that pulseaudio server, but i think it was about 20 percent of
CPU for a simple stream, with a terrible GUI, and that on
a i5-8250U CPU @ 1.60GHz with up to 3.4 Ghz (four core; the four
HT are alwys disabled).  20 percent!!

Sorry, the above is totally apart, but for me the above is still
such a tremendous thing that someone did; and for free.  Whoever
it was (i actually never tried to check it, now that i track their
git for so many years), *thank you*!
(And that includes the simple usual format conversions in between
those 22050/44100 etc etc.  Just like that -- open a device and
read it, no thousands of callbacks, nothing.  And 1.5 percent CPU.
Maybe it is not good/exact enough for studio level audio editing.
But i still have lots of those recordings, except that the "Balkan
piss box" chill somehow disappeared.  (Sorry Pedja, shall you read
this.))

In the lost-in-time department, my group at Digital Cambridge Research lab in 1993 did an audio interface patterned after the X Window system.  Paper in the Summer USENIX: https://www.usenix.org/legacy/publications/library/proceedings/cinci93/gettys.html

For extra fun, the lab director of CRL at the time was Vic Vyssotsky.

But there must have been some Bell work, because around 1983 (?) when I was doing Etherphone at PARC I visited John DeTreville at Holmdel.  He was building a voice - over - Ethernet system as well.

For what it is worth, your SCCS supports merging just fine.  We used
SCCS to do merges without copying by using your includes.  If SCCS had
had a -m for merge, it would have included the branch but then all the
other deltas going up to the GCA.  Much like the tip means the tip
but all the other deltas going back to 1.1.

SCCS was a big contribution to the state of the art, I am forever
grateful that you did it.  To this day I don't think people know
what you did.  When we were a business, every time some SCM came out,
Rick or I would ask "is there a weave" like you had done, if not,
we didn't care.  That weave format that you did 50 years ago is
awesome.

I never knew the technical details of what you had done, but I enjoyed
using SCCS in the mid-80's when I started using UNIX, and it helped me
develop an understanding of source code management disciplines.
Sometimes I had to use RCS when SCCS wasn't available, later I used
everything else, as we all did, but I always liked the way SCCS worked
on those first SunOS and Ultrix systems where I encountered it,
especially when it was well understood by the make utility. Thank you
for this great contribution, and I enjoyed reading your paper just now.

This is a nice paper. Marc, I think you're a little too hard on your
24-year old self. To have created the weave at the age of 24 indicates
(to me) that you were certainly a well above average programmer /
computer scientist.  Many of the other things you criticize could be
attributed to simply not knowing better (= not having yet had enough
experience).

My two cents, anyway.  Again, a nice paper.

In the early days of Unix there were intimate ties between CS Research and
Visual and Acoustic Research. V&A were Bell Labs' pioneer minicomputer
users because they needed interactive access to graphics and audio, which
would have been prohibitively expensive on the Labs' pre-timesharing
mainframes. Also they generally had EE backgrounds, so were comfortable
working hands-on with hardware, whereas CS had been largely spun off from
the math department.

Ed David, who led Bell Labs into Multics, without which Unix might not have
happened, had transferred from V&A to CS. So had Vic Vyssotsky and Elliot
Pinson (Dennis's department head and coauthor with me of the introduction
to the 1978 BSTJ Unix issue). John Kelly, a brilliant transferee who died
all too young pre-Unix, had collaborated with Vic on BLODI, the first
dataflow language, which took digital signal processing off breadboards and
into computers. One central member of the Unix lab, Lee McMahon, never left
V&A.

The PDP-7 of Unix v0 was a hand-me-down from Pinson's time in V&A. And the
PDP-11 of v1 was supported by a year-end fund surplus from there.

People came from V&A to CS because their interests had drifted from signal
processing to computing per se. With hindsight, one can see that CS
recruiting--even when it drew on engineering or physics
talent--concentrated on similarly motivated people. There was dabbling in
acoustics, such as my "speak" text-to-speech program. And there were
workers dedicated to a few specialties, such as Henry Baird in optical
character recognition. But unlike text processing, say, these fields never
reached a critical mass of support that might have stimulated a wider array
of I/O drivers or full toolkits to use them.

Meanwhile, in V&A Research linguists adopted Unix, but most others
continued to roll their own one-off platforms. It's interesting to
speculate whether the lack of audio interfaces in Unix was a cause or a
result of this do-it-yourself impulse.

Hi Doug,

This seems to clarify something I'm a bit murky on in early Unix/nroff
history, because I have read (and repeated, in groff's roff(7), the
claim that revenue from internal AT&T deployments of nroff were a major
aid to getting the CSRC on its feet hardware-wise.  But that's in some
tension with the story of Ossanna being able to deliver to the patent
application typists a new line numbering feature in the (n)roff
formatter "by tomorrow" if it was only after nroff's success that these
revenues showed up.

I also seem to remember from the preface to the v3 or v4 manual that the
CSRC was trying to get itself and its Unix users everywhere away from
the PDP-11/20 as fast as possibly, because that model didn't have memory
protection.

I thus have these questions:

What model of PDP-11 was v1 Unix developed and run on at the CSRC?

What model did the CSRC acquire next?  Specifically, which one did
(n)roff make possible?

Yes. V1 and V2 ran on the 11/20 without an MMU, while V3 and later was the
port to the 11/45 with an MMU. I touch on these transitions in my history
of unix
talk.

And I didn't know the connections that Douglas just relayed before my talk.
It
would have made it more interesting to include. Unix has always been about
making it easier to collaborate and collaboration has a multiplier effect.

I'd love to hear this info first hand too. I've delved and discovered what I
think the answers are, but I have no primary sources for them.

For what it's worth, there is a roff.s in the PDP-7 sources.

The first was an 11/20, initially, I seem to recall running without
any MMU (I remember a story that it was customary to yell out "a.out"
in the terminal room before running a newly compiled binary to give
everyone a chance to save their files).

I believe the step up was to the high-end 11/45, which I believe came
out before the 11/40 (a mid-range system with MMU but not separate
Instruction & Data spaces).

Very nicely written history, as well as explanation of how systems
differed. I appreciated reading this, but especially enjoyed one of the
closing paragraphs on the future:

How am I supposed to know? AI is already doing some coding. Maybe in ten or
twenty years it will do all of it. Will AI need version control? If it
does, will it be the latest version of Git, or maybe something invented by
AI?

For the younger and overall clarification.
Around Y2K many programs -- audio players, but also early desktop
environment "betas" of GNOME and KDE unless my memory fools me
completely (i used such by then, at least at times, when not under
FreeBSD cons25 or Linux then framebuffer!) -- had fixed paths
built-in, for example /dev/dsp or /dev/pcm or /dev/audio or
whatever it actually was (for real).  There may have been multiple
dev files, actually, ie, /dev/dsp1/2/3 etc, but the path was
built-in, and it would not multiplex: if you opened /dev/dsp1 you
had /dev/dsp1, but /dev/dsp and that thing was in use, and could
not be used for any other purpose, at all.

With the FreeBSD change program 1 could open "/dev/dsp", but
2 could open it, too, because it internally multiplexed to the
virtual .1 .2 .3 etc.  This was a tremendous improvement!

Eric Allman has kindly supplied a scan of the source code that ken
provided for the walkthrough. I've added it to the above location.
It's interesting in that there are comments at the start of each
function - the existing 5th Edition code that we have does not
have these comments.

With alloc.c the comments are there in v6 and the copyright line
removal matches the changes between v5 and v6.

The code appears to be somewhere between v6 and the "50 changes" tape
described by Mike O'Brien in:
Applications/Spencer_Tapes/unsw3.tar.gz
usr/sys/v6unix/changenotes

Some of the pages are dated 1976, and sysent[] on p 87 has post v6
system calls: access(), alarm(), pause().

You might be synthesizing a bit of serendipity that wasn't there in
the moment in both directions: what switches were and where multimedia
wasn't yet.  The 5ESS is primarily concerned with time/space/time
switching, that those slots are PCM audio, signalling, or data is not
so important beyond getting it to the right place on time.  To
potentially highlight the distinction, you need a seperate machine
(potentially many) called an announcement system, to produce what
you'd assume to be intrinsic and familiar audio necessary for end user
telephony on a 5E.  So it is not so great at much related to computer
audio unless you consider line interface units really expensive
ADC/DAC.  And that is the domain of microcontrollers far away from
UNIX.  It might live on completely separate machines like channel
banks or SLC systems.  So the BORSCHT part of getting analog audio in
and out predates all this and maybe PCM _is_ the great achievement for
computer audio, because regardless of how the audio is produced or
encoded it probably lives as PCM at your DAC.

I will speculate that the AT&T folks didn't yet have pressing need for
UNIX to have rich multimedia capabilities so they just weren't in the
position to define lasting APIs - you can find historical research
systems of the IBM mainframe and DEC variety where people were
figuring out things like music and speech synthesis at Bell and
elsewhere.  But for Big Telecom, think more like TI's Speak&Spell...
microcontroller, PCM ROM, DAC..  That's the way electronic phone
systems were designed when it came time to produce audio, as
distributed systems of microcontrollers or DSPs and fixed function
ASICs, with as little involvement from anything resembling a full OS
as possible.  It wasn't until the 1990s that Computer Telephony (CT)
really took off, with vendors like Dialogic, or later on software like
Asterisk.  That was maybe concurrent to the Multimedia PC of the early
1990s where the desire went beyond games synthesis or commanding a
CD/LaserDisc's PCM to storing, processing, and playback of media files
-- now you need audio APIs -- and AT&T is no longer in the driver's
seat.  OSS is pretty good, and was in there by the time Univel took
the helm of UNIX where they thought so too so it might be as close to
official as one can get.  Audio is one of those areas where Linux
earns the facepalm.

It's a great paper. I think the most interesting aspect is that the set
of loopholes Reeds concentrates on for the majority of the paper (Class 2)
aren't holes in the shell, per se. Except for the already-mentioned
behaviors of inheriting IFS from the environment and using it to split
all words, all of the weaknesses Reeds described are sloppy, but common,
programming practices in setuid programs. His conclusions are still
relevant.

Robert's uucp was in use in the Research world when I arrived
in late summer of 1984.  It had an interesting and sensible
structure; in particular uucico was split into two programs,
ci and co.

One of the first things I was asked to do when I got there was
to get Honey Danber working as a replacement.  I don't remember
why that was preferred; possibly just because Robert was a
summer student, not a full-fledged member of the lab, and we
didn't want something as important to us as uucp to rely on
orphaned code.

Honey Danber was in place by the time we made the V8 tape,
toward the end of 1984.

That was an important motivating factor, but Mike also had an
unerring anticipatory sense of public "need".  Thus his programs
spread like wildfire despite their bugs. UUCP itself is the premier
example. Its popularity impelled its inclusion in v7 despite its
woeful disregard for security.

Michael has explained his authorship of UUCP as a stop gap.  The networking
team was building the real solution and it was due in three weeks.  So he
wrote UUCP to fill in until the official solution arrived.

I chanced upon a brochure describing the Perkin-Elmer Series 3200 / 
(previously Interdata, later Concurrent Computer Corporation) Sort/Merge 
II utility [1].  It is instructive to compare its design against that of 
the contemporary Unix sort(1) program [2].

- Sort/Merge II appears to be marketed as a separate product (P/N 
S90-408), whereas sort(1) was/is an integral part of the Unix used 
throughout the system.

- Sort/Merge II provides interactive and batch command input modes; 
sort(1) relies on the shell to support both usages.

- Sort/Merge II appears to be able to also sort binary files; sort(1) 
can only handle text.

- Sort/Merge II can recover from run-time errors by interactively 
prompting for user corrections and additional files.  In Unix this is 
delegated to shell scripts.

- Sort/Merge II has built-in support for tape handling and blocking; 
sort(1) relies on pipes from/to dd(1) for this.

- Sort/Merge II supports user-coded decision subroutines written in 
FORTRAN, COBOL, or CAL.  Sort(1) doesn't have such support to this day. 
One could construct a synthetic key with awk(1) if needed.

- Sort/Merge II can automatically "allocate" its temporary file.  For 
sort(1) file allocation is handled by the Unix kernel.

To me this list is a real-life demonstration of the differences between 
the, prevalent at the time, thoughtless agglomeration of features into a 
monolith approach against Unix's careful separation of concerns and 
modularization via small tools.  The same contrast appears in a more 
contrived setting in J. Bentley's CACM Programming Pearl's column where 
Doug McIlroy critiques a unique word counting literate program written 
by Don Knuth [3].  (I slightly suspect that the initial program 
specification was a trap set up for Knuth.)

I also think that the design of Perkin-Elmer's Sort/Merge II shows the 
influence of salespeople forcing developers to tack-on whatever features 
were required by important customers.  Maybe the clean design of Unix 
owes a lot to AT&T's operation under the 1956 consent decree that 
prevented it from entering the computer market.  This may have shielded 
the system's design from unhealthy market pressures during its critical 
gestation years.

It wasn't a setup. Although Jon's introduction seems to imply that he had
invited both Don and me to participate, I actually was moved to write the
critique when I proofread the 2-author column, as I did for many of Jon's
Programming Pearls. That led to the 3-author arrangement. Knuth and
I are still friends; he even reprinted the critique. It is also memorably

IIRC sort/merge was/is a pretty major thing on IBM mainframes, with
products from multiple companies. May be Perkin-Elmer were trying
to compete with mainframe sort/merge products? Also, I suspect that
for sorting terabytes of data Unix sort likely won't work as fast as
mainframe sorts....

Do you know anything about the design of the P-E S/M, or is just a biased
guess? Have you ever tried a large external sort with UNIX commands?

That's not a resaonable comparison. In the 1960s and 1970s computers spent more
time doing sort/merge than anything else, perhaps than everything else. Computer
manufacturers tried really hard to make sorting fast, with clever hacks like
compiling the comparison rules into machine code so they don't have to be
reinterpreted for each record, scheduling their own I/O to keep devices busy,
and reading intermediate tapes backward so they didn't have to rewind between
passes. 

They also handle really big files, tape files that span more than one tape reel
or sometimes disk files that span more than one removable pack.. In that era a
tape held about 150MB and a 3330 disk pack was about 100MB. If you had big
files, you had to keep them on tape and that meant a lot of sorting and merging
to do updates. Even on disk, databases were nothing like they are now and what
would now be in a SQL database was more likely in sorted files that were
rewritten periodically with changes merged in.

The P-E sort is a mainframe sort.  Compare it to this IBM DOS VS sort and you'll
see many of the same features, I am sure not by coincidence.

The unix sort program is fine for what it does which is sorting toy sized files on
small disks.  There's nothing wrong with that, I still use it all the time, but
other than the name it doesn't have much in common with mainframe sort/merge.

I gave specific examples of facilities offered by the Perkin-Elmer 
Sort/Merge, (file allocation, blocking, interactive and batch modes) 
that on Unix systems are handled in a way that allows all programs to 
benefit from them.  The Unix way reduces duplication and makes the 
system more versatile by offering the facilities to all programs.

I based my comparison on the documented facilities of the two programs. 
I also have some first hand experience with Perkin-Elmer's OS/32.  In 
the 1990s I was involved in servicing and transferring some 
record-keeping applications from a Perkin-Elmer running OS/32 and 
RELIANCE to a Unix system running Ingres.  I found I was a lot more 
productive in Unix's shell than in Perkin-Elmer's MTM.  (Admittedly, 
this could also be a matter of experience.)

In 2018 I used the Unix sort and join commands to speed up a MariaDB 
relational join of a five billion row table with a 847 million row table 
(108 GB in total) from 380 hours to 12 hours [1], so I'm very happy with 
how Unix sort can handle moderately large data sets.  The GNU version 
will even recursively merge intermediate files when it runs out of file 
descriptors.  Even the Seventh Edition sort would overflow to temporary 
files and merge them [2].

I'm sure the mainframe sort programs did some pretty amazing things and 
could run circles around the puny 830 line Unix Seventh Edition sort 
program.  The 215 page IBM DOS VS sort documentation that John Levine 
posted here is particularly impressive.  But I can't stop thinking that, 
in common with the mainframes these programs were running on, they 
represent a mindset that has been surpassed by superior ideas.

I disagree.  Go back and read the reply where someone was talking about
sorting datasets that spanned multiple tapes, each of which was much
larger than local disk.  sort(1) can't begin to think about handling
something like that.

I have a lot of respect for how Unix does things, if the problem fits
then the Unix answer is more simple, more flexible, it's better.  If
the problem doesn't fit, the Unix answer is awful.

cmd < data | cmd2 | cmd3

is a LOT of data copying.  A custom answer that did all of that in
one address space is a lot more efficient but also a lot more special
purpose.  Unix wins on flexibility and simplicity, special purpose
wins on performance.

Another consideration:  the smaller System/360 mainframes ran DOS (Disk
Operating System) or TOS (Tape Operating System, for shops that didn't have
disks).  These were both single-process operating systems.  There is no way
that the Unix method of chaining programs together could have been done.

OS MFT (Multiprogramming with a Fixed number of Tasks) and MVT
(Multiprogramming with a Variable number of Tasks) were multiprocess
systems, but they lacked any interprocess communication system (such as
Unix pipes).

True databases in those days were rare, expensive, slow, and of limited
capacity.  The usual way to, say, produce a list of customers who owed
money, sorted by how much they owed would be:

[1] scan the data set for customers who owed money and write that out to
tape(s)

[2] use sort/merge to sort the data on tape(s) in the desired order

[3] run a program to print the sorted data in the desired format

It is important in step [2] to keep the tapes moving.  Start/stop
operations waste a ton of time.  Most of the complexity of the mainframe
sort/merge programs was in I/O management to keep the devices busy to the
maximum extent.  The gold standard for sort/merge in the IBM world was a
third-party program called SyncSort.  It cost a fortune but was well worth
it for the big shops.

So the short, bottom line answer is that the Unix way wasn't even possible
on the smaller mainframes and was too inefficient for the large ones.

Mainframes had usage based pricing, not unlike what you pay for renting
resources in the cloud, so performance really mattered. Also note that
users use whatever computing resources they have available to get their
job done, ideally at the lowest cost. Elegance of any OS architecture
is secondary, if that.

Related to the sort discussion, there's an oral history of Duane Whitlow,
founder of SyncSort, which was a big deal in IBM shops in the 70s. (and
perhaps later; I lost track)

Another problem with arrangements of small UNIX commands in pipelines is
that the actual arrangement in use suffers from reliability and usability
problems:

1. No way to test the whole, since in general each application has a unique
structure with a potentially different choice of components, (A shell
program executes whatever commands are on the system, not those it might
have been tested with.)
2. No comprehensive error reporting (at best, reporting from individual
commands), and
3. No way to provide support.

On a much smaller scale, imagine a component stereo setup that is
delivering bad sound. You have a turntable, an arm, a cartridge, a pre-amp,
an amp, speakers, and cables and wires, typically from seven or more
different manufacturers. Not one of them would be able to help you with
support. The dealer would, if you bought the whole lot from them. Or you
could pay a consultant. This is one reason why in the 1960s so-called
console stereos were popular. Generally, console stereos delivered inferior
sound.

This isn't a criticism of sorting with UNIX commands, it's a broader
criticism of the UNIX software tools approach for serious application
development.

Of course, one could build a single system out of components, and package
it all together as a tested and supported product. That's exactly what
object-oriented programming does, and very successfully.

I checked and syncsort is still  out there, doing their thing. Fifty years
of sorting! Sort of amazing.

I’d like to challenge the "Big Iron” hypothesis having worked with IBM/370 systems early on, DOS-VS, VM/CMS and some OS/MVS.
The system design and standard tools forced considerable complexity & waste in CPU time & storage compared to Unix I'd used at UNSW.

Probably the harshest criticism is the lack of O/S & tool development forced by IBM’s “backwards compatibility” model - at least while I had to battle it.

 [ Ken Robinson at UNSW had used OS/360 since ~1965. in 1975 he warned me about a pernicious batch job error message, ]
 [  “No space” - except it didn’t say on _which_ ‘DD’ (data definition == file). The O/S _knew_ exactly what was wrong, but didn’t say.]
 [ I hit this problem at work ~1985, costing me a week or two of time, plus considerable ‘chargeback’ expenses for wasted CPU & disk usage ]
 [ the problem was a trivial one if I’d had Unix piplelines available]

Just because mainframes are still used for the majority of business critical online “transaction” systems, doesn’t mean they are great, even good, solutions.
It only means the "cost of exit” is more than the owners wish to pay, it’s cheaper to keep old designs running than to change.

To achieve the perceived ‘high performance’ of mainframes required considerable SysProg, programmer/analyst & Operations work/ time.
Simple things such as the optimum ‘block size’ for a particular disk drive caused months of work for our operations team when we changed drives.
(2314 removable to 3350 sealed HDA’s)

Andrew Hume’s “Project Gecko” is worth reading for those who don’t know it.
I’m sure if Andrew & team had been tried to build a similar system a decade before, they’d have figured a way to stream data between tape drives,
the initial use-case for ’syncsort’ discussed.

Andrew used the standard Unix tools, a small amount of C, flat files and intelligent ’streaming processing’ from one disk to another, then back,
to push a SUN system to its limits, and handsomely beat Oracle.

We’ve already had the Knuth / McIlroy ‘literate programming’ vs ’shell one-liner’ example in this thread.

It comes down to the same thing:

	Unix’s philosophy is good design and “Tools to Build Tools”,
	allowing everyone to Stand On the Shoulders of Giants, 
	not _have_ to endlessly reinvent the wheel for themselves, 
	which the mainframe world forces on everyone.

Gecko: tracking a very large billing system

	This paper describes Gecko, a system for tracking the state of every call in a very large billing system,
	 which uses sorted flat files to implement a database of about 60G records occupying 2.6TB.

	After a team at Research, including two interns from Consumer Billing, built a successful prototype in 1996, 
	the decision was made to build a production version. 
	A team of six people (within Consumer Billing) started in March 1997 and the system went live in December 1997.

	The design we implemented to solve the database problem does not use conventional database technology; 
	as described in [Hum99], we experimented with an Oracle-based implementation, but it was unsatisfactory.

	Instead, we used sorted flat files and relied on the speed and I/O capacity of modern high-end Unix systems, such as large SGI and Sun systems.

	The system supporting the datastore is a Sun E10000, with 32 processors and 6GB of memory, running Solaris 2.6. 
	The datastore disk storage is provided by 16 A3000 (formerly RSM2000) RAID cabinets, 
		which provides about 3.6TB of RAID-5 disk storage. 
	For backup purposes, we have a StorageTek 9310 Powderhorn tape silo with 8 Redwood tape drives.

	The datastore is organised as 93 filesystems, each with 52 directories; each directory contains a partition of the datastore…

	We can characterise Gecko’s performance by two measures. 
		The first is how long it takes to achieve the report and cycle end gates. 
		The second is how fast we can scan the datastore performing an ad hoc search/extract.

	Over the last 12 cycles, the report gate ranged between 6.1 and 9.9 wall clock hours, with an average time of 7.6 hours. 

	The cycle end gate is reached after the updated datastore has been backed up and any other housekeeping chores have been completed. 
	Over the last 12 cycles, the cycle end gate ranged between 11.1 and 15.1 wall clock hours, 
		with an average time of 11.5 hours. 
	Both these averages comfortably beat the original requirements.

	The implementation of Gecko relies heavily on a modest number of tools in the implementation of its processing and the management of that processing. 
	Nearly all of these have application beyond Gecko and so we describe them here.

	Most of the code is written in C and ksh; the remainder is in awk.

	The Gecko scripts make extensive use of grep, and in particular, fgrep for searching for many fixed strings in a file. 
	Solaris’s fgrep has an unacceptably low limit on the number of strings (we routinely search for 5-6000 strings, and sometimes 20000 or so). 

	The XPG4 version has much higher limits, but runs unacceptably slowly with large lists. 

	We finally switched to gre, developed by Andrew Hume in 1986. 
	For our larger lists, it runs about 200 times faster, cutting run times from 45 minutes down to 15 seconds or so.

All-in-one vs pipelined sorts brought to mind NSA's undeservedly obscure
dataflow language, POGOL, https://doi.org/10.1145/512927.512948 (POPL
1973). In POGOL one wrote programs as collections of routines that
communicated via named files, which the compiler did its best to optimize
away. Often this amounted to loop jamming or to the distributive law for
map over function composition. POGOL could, however, handle general
dataflow programming including feedback loops.

One can imagine a program for pulling the POGOL trick on a shell pipeline.
That could accomplish--at negligible cost--the conversion of a cheap demo
into a genuine candidate for intensive production use.

This consideration spurs another thought. Despite Unix's claim to build
tools to make tools, only a relativelly narrow scope of higher-order tools
that take programs as dara ever arose. After the bootstrapping B, there
were a number of compilers,  most notably C, plus  f77, bc, ratfor, and
struct. A slight variant on the idea of compiling was the suite of troff
preprocessors.

The shell also manipulates programs by composing them into larger programs.

Aside from such examples, only one other category of higher-order Unix
program comes to mind: Peter Weinberger's lcomp for instrumenting C
programs with instruction counts.

An offshoot of Unix were Gerard Holzmann's tools for extracting
model-checker models from C programs. These saw use at Indian Hill and most
notably at JPL, but never appeared among mainstream Unix offerings. Similar
tools exist in-house at Microsoft and elsewhere. But generally speaking we
have vey few kinds of programs that manipulate programs.

What are the prospects for computer science advancing to a stage where
higher-level programs become commonplace? What might be in one's standard
vocabulary of functions that operate on programs?
